Aphrodite’s Discourse
Aphrodite’s Discourse features recent artworks by Frida Wannerberger and Weijue Wang, exploring contemporary femininity and desire through the lens of Aphrodite.
The exaggerated puffy-sleeve dress, intricate patterns, and the ethereal yet emotionally ambiguous young girl are highly recognisable elements in the works of the artist Frida Wannerberger. On the other hand, Weijue Wang uses felt with a velvety texture and lace to create a series of seemingly soft and alluring pieces that represent desire and femininity.
Entering the exhibition “Aphrodite’s Discourse,” you might be bewildered by works brimming with femininity. It feels like stepping into a young girl’s dream, a “gentle haven” that lets down one’s guard. In her story, Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty, still explores the relationship of power, the game of conquest and submission, the subject’s desire to control, and the loss of love. Even as a goddess, she experienced the full range of human emotions and desires. If Aphrodite were to embody contemporary womanhood, how would she choose to express herself and speak her truth?
