The Other Singaporeans: Stories of Home and Identity

The Other Singaporeans examines the complex and shifting notions of home, belonging, and identity. Reflecting on Singapore’s 60th anniversary of independence, the exhibition rethinks Singaporean identity by featuring artists who are naturalised Singaporeans, former Singaporeans, foreigners residing in Singapore, and Singaporeans living overseas. Instead of reinforcing a singular, state-driven narrative of progress and identity, The Other Singaporeans delivers the experiences of artists at the periphery, those who have navigated displacement, migration, orientation, and cultural hybridity.

In this dynamic landscape, artists engage in a complex interplay of personal histories, cultural influences, and societal dynamics. Their works illuminate alternative perspectives on migration, belonging, and cultural identity, challenging conventional understandings of what it means to be Singaporean.
